چکیده

We present the discovery of six new quasars at z ∼ 6 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) southern survey, a deep imaging survey obtained by repeatedly scanning a stripe along the celestial equator. The six quasars are about two magnitudes fainter than the luminous z ∼ 6 quasars found in the SDSS main survey and one magnitude fainter than the quasars reported in Paper I (Jiang et al. 2008). Four of them comprise a complete flux-limited sample at 21 < zAB < 21.8 over an effective area of 195 deg2. The other two quasars are fainter than zAB = 22 and are not part of the complete sample. The quasar luminosity function at z ∼ 6 is well described as a single power law Φ(L1450) ∝ L β 1450 over the luminosity range −28 < M1450 < −25. The best-fitting slope β varies from –2.6 to –3.1, depending on the quasar samples used, with a statistical error of 0.3–0.4. About 40% of the quasars discovered in the SDSS southern survey have very narrow Lyα emission lines, which may indicate small black hole masses and high Eddington luminosity ratios, and therefore short black hole growth time scales for these faint quasars at early epochs. A Survey of Z ∼ 6 Quasars in the Sdss Deep Stripe : I . a Flux - Limited Sample at Z Ab < 21

We present the discovery of five quasars at z ∼ 6 selected from 260 deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) southern survey, a deep imaging survey obtained by repeatedly scanning a stripe along the Celestial Equator. The five quasars with 20 < zAB < 21 are 1–2 magnitudes fainter than the luminous z ∼ 6 quasars discovered in the SDSS main survey. One of them was independently discovered by th...

Six More Quasars at Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey

We present imaging and spectroscopic observations for six quasars at z ≥ 5.9 discovered by the CanadaFrance High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS). The CFHQS contains sub-surveys with a range of flux and area combinations to sample a wide range of quasar luminosities at z ∼ 6. The new quasars have luminosities 10 to 75 times lower than the most luminous SDSS quasars at this redshift. The least luminous q...

We present a search for O i in the spectra of nine 4.9 ≤ zQSO ≤ 6.4 QSOs taken with Keck/HIRES. We detect six systems with NO I > 10 13.7 cm in the redshift intervals where O i λ1302 falls redward of the Lyα forest. Four of these lie towards SDSS J1148+5251 (zQSO = 6.42). This imbalance is unlikely to arise from variations in sensitivity among our data or from a statistical fluctuation. The exc...

The Optical and Near-Infrared Properties of 2837 Quasars in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is the first of a new generation of hemispheric imaging projects to extend the work of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) by reaching three magnitudes deeper in Y JHK imaging, to K = 18.2 (5σ, Vega) over wide fields. Better complementing existing optical surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the resulting public imaging catalogues pr...

Mass Functions of the Active Black Holes in Distant Quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey, the Bright Quasar Survey, and the Color-selected Sample of the Sdss Fall Equatorial Stripe

We present mass functions of distant actively accreting supermassive black holes residing in luminous quasars discovered in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS), the Bright Quasar Survey (BQS), and the Fall Equatorial Stripe of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The quasars cover a wide range of redshifts from the local universe to z = 5 and were subject to different selection criteria and f...
